For much of human history, people have tried to answer one persistent question: Does life have meaning?
Some traditions insist that everything has meaning and that nothing happens without purpose, reason, or design. Others argue the opposite that life has no inherent meaning, and that seeking it only leads to illusion or disappointment. Still others teach that meaning is something we create, assign, or construct through interpretation.
Each of these perspectives holds truth. And none of them are complete on their own.
Life is not one-dimensional. Neither is meaning.
What if meaning is not a single answer but a trinity of experiences we move through across different stages of life?
Meaningful: When Meaning Is Revealed
There are seasons when life feels undeniably meaningful.
Connections form with clarity.
Events align with purpose.
Experiences carry direction and coherence.
In these stages, meaning is not something we assign, it feels revealed. We sense that life is guiding, shaping, or instructing us. This is often where spiritual frameworks, purpose-driven teachings, and faith-based interpretations resonate most strongly.
Meaning here provides:
orientation
motivation
resilience
hope
And it matters deeply.
But this is not the only way meaning operates.
Meaningless: When Meaning Falls Away
There are also seasons when meaning disappears. Not symbolically, actually.
Things stop making sense. Narratives fail. Purpose feels distant or irrelevant.
This is often misunderstood as nihilism, despair, or spiritual failure. But meaninglessness is not the absence of life, it is the absence of imposed explanation.
Meaninglessness creates space.
In these moments:
life is lived rather than interpreted
pressure dissolves
performance ends
presence becomes possible
This isn’t nihilism. It’s honest contact with reality without narrative pressure.
Meaninglessness allows the nervous system, the psyche, and the soul to rest from constant interpretation. And that rest is not empty. It’s restorative.
Meaning-Making: When Meaning Is Assigned
There are also seasons where meaning is neither revealed nor absent but constructed.
We tell stories.
We interpret experiences.
We assign significance to events to make sense of them.
Meaning-making is not false or manipulative, it’s human.
It helps us:
integrate experiences
communicate understanding
teach and transmit wisdom
contextualize growth
But meaning-making becomes harmful when it’s treated as universal or permanent—when one person’s interpretation is imposed as another person’s truth. Meaning-making is a tool, not a law.
The Integration: A Multi-Meaning Life
The mistake many schools of thought make is insisting that one mode of meaning applies to all stages of life.
But life is developmental.
There are times when meaning is revealed.
There are times when meaning dissolves.
There are times when meaning is created.
A mature, integrated life allows all three without absolutizing any of them.
Meaning is not lost when it becomes quiet.
Meaninglessness is not dangerous when it’s honest.
Meaning-making is not wrong when it’s held lightly.
They are not enemies. They are phases of the same human intelligence.
Living Beyond the Debate
You don’t need to choose one philosophy and reject the others.
You are allowed to:
experience meaning without clinging to it
experience meaninglessness without fearing it
create meaning without forcing it on yourself or others
This is the freedom of a multi-meaning life. When we stop arguing about which perspective is “right,” we begin to live with greater compassion for ourselves and for others navigating different stages. Life doesn’t ask us to decide what meaning is once and for all. It invites us to recognize how meaning moves.
