Hackaday Build — Pi Chessboard: What a Glowing Board Taught Me About Lore in Code

Jul 12, 2026

I've been building Duet — a screen-reader-accessible variant of Veiled Dominion — and something keeps striking me: the lore isn't decoration sitting on top of the mechanics. It's the same thing, just told in a different language.

A quick clarification first, since I linked a build video here: the physical chessboard in that video plays standard chess — it runs the Stockfish engine, which only knows conventional rules. It does not run Veiled Dominion or Duet's ruleset. There's no Rebirth, no Death, no Radius of Ruin on that board as it exists today. I linked it because watching its LEDs enforce rules in real time is what got me thinking about how mechanics and story connect — not because it's already running our game. If you want the actual technical breakdown of what would need to change to make a board like that run Duet's rules, that's over on Patreon — I kept the engineering side there and kept this post about the ideas.

So here, with an actual Veiled Dominion board in mind instead:

Rebirth's story is that she was born too bright — the things she's meant to protect, she extinguishes just by being near them. That's not just a character beat. It's her actual Radius of Ruin: an 8-square aura where any piece, ally or enemy, that lingers too long becomes Veiled — stripped down to pawn-level movement. The lore is the rule.

Death's story is that he's her unshaken mentor. Mechanically: he can't be captured, pieces pass through him, and anything near him is immune to Rebirth's aura. Sanctuary isn't bolted on — it's just what "safety near someone unshakeable" looks like once you turn it into logic.

That's the part I find most worth talking about here: narrative shaping what a function actually does, not just what a character says.

If you want to see it in motion: Duet is free to play on itch — no download, just a browser tab. Built screen-reader-first, with a procedural (non-AI) audio cue for the Radius of Ruin. If you try it, I'd love feedback — especially from anyone testing with an actual screen reader.
