Between the weak extreme heat and the smoky bad air quality days I got a little behind in updating the potato challenge. However, this did not affect the progress of my plants!
Photo 1 are the potatoes I planted on week 4.
Photo 2 are the potatoes from week 1 and you can see that the grow bag plants are doing a little better than the ones in the box but not by much. I suspect that I put too many in the box so they are a bit crowded. That should not prevent me from getting a crop from them.
Photo 3 shows the plants I planted on week 4 on week 6.
Photo 4 are the bag and the box on week 7. Surprisingly, the plants from week 4 grew past the height of the first ones and that is because they received extra rain water and had soil that was a little bit more enriched. Thankfully, they are all in good shape give or take a few yellow leaves in the box plants.
This past weekend on week eight, I planted one more bag of potatoes and that will likely be my last given that we are already past the middle of the growing season for my zone.
For those of you with longer growing seasons (zones 7, 8 & 9) you can still join the challenge and have a little potato harvest by the end of the Summer into early Fall!
Potatoes are such beautiful plants so they also make lovely decor for your yard, deck or balcony or wherever you can get them going! Mine haven’t flowered yet but I should see some small blooms appear soon.
Did you join the challenge? Have you grown potatoes before? What else would you like to learn to grow?
