If you're traveling in Japan right now, get ready for a dramatic change. A powerful cold snap, described by meteorologists as "mid-winter level," is set to sweep across the country from tomorrow, December 3rd. This isn't just a slight dip in temperature; it's the strongest cold air mass of the season so far, bringing heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and blizzard conditions to many areas.
Whether you're hoping for snow or just trying to stay warm, here’s what you need to know to prepare for the next few days.
The Big Picture: What to Expect
Starting Wednesday, December 3rd, and continuing through Thursday, December 4th, a mass of cold air typically seen in the depths of January will move over Japan. An air temperature of -6°C at 1500 meters—a key indicator for snowfall on the plains—is expected to reach as far south as the Western Japan (Kansai) region.
Key Forecasts:
Heavy Snow: Significant snowfall is predicted for the Sea of Japan coast, from Hokkaido all the way down to the Hokuriku region (Ishikawa, Toyama, etc.).
Snow in the West: Even the northern Kinki (Kyoto, Hyogo) and San'in (Tottori, Shimane) regions could see snow accumulation, including on the plains.
Plummeting Temperatures: Major cities will experience a sharp drop in temperature, feeling much colder due to strong winds.

Here’s a look at what to expect across the country on Thursday, December 4th:
In Hokkaido & Tohoku, expect heavy snow, strong winds, and potential blizzard conditions. The high temperature in Sapporo will be a frigid -1°C, meaning it will be freezing all day.
For the Hokuriku region (the Sea of Japan coast), heavy snow is forecast, especially in mountainous areas. The high in Kanazawa will be around 7°C.
Further west in the Kinki & San'in regions, snow is possible, with accumulation likely in the mountains. Osaka will see a high of only 10°C.
In the Kanto region, Tokyo will be mostly sunny but feel very cold and windy, with a high of 11°C, which is more typical for late December.
Finally, in the Tokai region, Nagoya will experience a true winter chill, with a high of just 8°C.
Even on the largely sunny Pacific side, cold winds will make it feel much colder than the thermometer suggests. This is the time to break out your serious winter gear.

Driving is Extremely Hazardous
Driving in these conditions without proper preparation is a major risk. If you are renting a car or driving, you must take precautions.
Do NOT Use Normal Tires: This cannot be stressed enough. Normal tires become hard in the cold and lose their grip entirely on snow and ice. Stopping distances can be nearly double that of winter tires.
Winter Tires are Essential: Ensure your rental car is equipped with winter tires (スタッドレスタイヤ, sutaddoresu taiya). Check the tire treads for wear before you drive.
Avoid Sudden Movements: Do not brake, accelerate, or steer suddenly. All movements should be slow and deliberate to avoid skidding.
General Preparedness
Dress in Layers: A down jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf are highly recommended, even in cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
Check Transportation: Heavy snow and blizzards can cause delays or cancellations for trains (including Shinkansen) and flights, especially in Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Hokuriku. Check your route status before you travel.
