Facing the Unknown
Life’s storms are often unpredictable, chaotic, and beyond our control.
The disciples find themselves struggling against a strong wind and rough waters, fighting to keep their boat from being swallowed by the waves. And these were experienced fishermen—accustomed to the sea and its dangers.
But sometimes, even our own strength and experience aren’t enough to handle the storms of life.
Into this moment of panic and vulnerability, something extraordinary occurs: a supernatural encounter that transcends human understanding.
The Theophany: Encountering God
The concept of theophany refers to an appearance or manifestation of God to humans. Scripture is filled with such moments:
God speaking to Moses through the burning bush. (Exodus 3)
God appearing to Elijah not in the wind or fire, but in a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19)
God parting the Red Sea to deliver Israel. (Exodus 14)
In this story, Jesus walking on water is a clear theophany—a revelation of God’s presence and power.
Revealing Jesus’s Divine Identity
By walking on water, Jesus performs an act reserved for God alone.
“He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.” (Job 9:8)
“It is I; do not be afraid.” (John 6:20)
The phrase “It is I” (Greek: ἐγώ εἰμι, ego eimi) echoes God’s self-revelation to Moses in Exodus 3:14:
“I AM WHO I AM.”
Jesus is not just performing a miracle; He is revealing His divine nature.
Mastery Over Chaos
The sea, in biblical symbolism, often represents chaos, danger, and forces beyond human control.
Jesus walking on water is a demonstration of divine authority over the chaotic forces of nature.
Just as God parted the Red Sea for Israel and calmed the storm for Jonah, Jesus asserts divine authority over creation itself.
The Significance of the Theophany
This moment reveals three important truths about Jesus’s nature and mission.
Reassurance of God’s Presence
The disciples were terrified when they saw Jesus approaching.
But His words, “It is I; do not be afraid,” are both a reassurance of His presence and an invitation to trust Him.
This is not just about physical safety but about spiritual assurance—God is present even in the most terrifying moments.
Invitation to Faith
Jesus doesn’t calm the storm right away. Instead, He invites the disciples to recognise His presence and power even in the midst of the storm.
Faith doesn’t always mean escaping the storm; sometimes it means finding God’s presence within it.
This moment challenges the disciples to shift from fear to trust.
Revelation of God’s Nature
The walking on water is a sign of divine authority, but it’s also a sign of divine compassion.
Jesus doesn’t simply show His power—He uses that power to reassure, comfort, and draw the disciples closer to faith.
The storm and the sea are not the main point; the presence of Jesus and His invitation to faith are what truly matter.
Themes and Application
Fear of the Unknown
Even the most experienced and faithful people can feel afraid when facing the unknown.
The disciples’ fear of the storm was compounded by their fear of the supernatural, seeing Jesus walking on water.
We, too, can be shaken by things we don’t understand or cannot control.
Faith and Trust
Jesus’s words, “It is I; do not be afraid,” are a call to anchor our faith in God’s presence and power.
This story invites us to trust in God’s presence even when the storm isn’t calmed right away.
Lent is a time to examine where we place our trust. Are we trusting in our own strength, or are we trusting in the One who walks with us through the storm?
Recognising God’s Presence
Just as Jesus walked towards the disciples on the water, God comes to us in our moments of fear and struggle.
When we feel overwhelmed, we are invited to look for the theophanies in our own lives—moments where we encounter God’s power, presence, and care.
