I’m happy to share that the translation of Alexander Khatisian’s memoir, The Origin and Development of the Republic of Armenia, is progressing well. After many months of work, I’m now able to present a first working draft of the translation.
The opening chapter, “The Provisional Government of Russia and the Armenians,” examines the Armenian question within the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917 and the uncertainty that followed in the Caucasus after the February and October Revolutions. Writing as a direct participant, Khatisian moves between Tbilisi, Petrograd, and military headquarters, offering a firsthand account of how revolution, army disintegration, and political fragmentation shaped Armenian political thinking on the eve of independence.
Khatisian writes not only about the events and institutions, but also the atmosphere of confusion, expectation, and urgency—when strategy had to replace slogans and critical decisions were made during wartime, under extreme pressure and ethnic tensions.
This is a working draft, not the final translation. Further editing, maps, photographs, refinement, annotation and historical context will follow.
