Prepping Your Dishwasher for Homemade Automatic Dishwasher Soap

To get the best results from your homemade dishwasher soap, it’s important to give your dishwasher a little TLC before you begin. Over time, scum can build up inside your dishwasher from previous detergents with chemical additives or less effective homemade recipes. Here’s how to clean it up and start fresh:

Step 1: Run a Cleaning Cycle with White Vinegar

  1. Run a Hot Cycle: Add white vinegar to the bottom of your dishwasher and run it through a hot cycle. This helps break down most of the scum buildup.

  2. Repeat if Needed: If there’s heavy buildup, you might need to repeat the cycle a couple of times to fully dissolve the residue.

Modern dishwashers, especially energy-saving models, recycle water throughout the cycle rather than continuously heating it. If scum remains, it can circulate over your dishes during washes — yuck! That’s why commercial detergents rely on harsh chemicals like bleach to clear it out. But with a little extra effort, you can achieve the same results without compromising your health.

Step 2: Manual Cleaning for Stubborn Scum

If stubborn scum lingers:

  1. Spray and Scrub: Spray the interior surfaces with white vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes.

  2. Gently Scrub: Use a soft, non-abrasive sponge (like a blue Scotch Brite) to gently scrub all surfaces, paying close attention to trays, corners, and hidden crevices.

Step 3: Tackle Tough Scum with Orange-Infused Vinegar (Optional)

For the toughest scum, orange-infused vinegar can do wonders! Here’s how to prepare it:

  1. Make It Ahead: Place orange peels in a large, lidded container and fill with white vinegar. Cover and let sit for about 6 weeks.

  2. Strain and Use: Once ready, strain out the peels and transfer the infused vinegar into a spray or pump bottle. The slightly syrupy mixture is great for breaking down heavy buildup.

With a fresh, clean dishwasher, you're ready to enjoy spotless dishes and the peace of mind that comes with using safe, natural ingredients! 🌿✨
