Over time, scum can build up inside your dishwasher from previous detergents with chemical additives or less effective homemade recipes. Here’s how to clean it up and start fresh:
Step 1: Run a Cleaning Cycle with White Vinegar
Run a Hot Cycle: Add white vinegar to the bottom of your dishwasher and run it through a hot cycle. This helps break down most of the scum buildup.
Repeat if Needed: If there’s heavy buildup, you might need to repeat the cycle a couple of times to fully dissolve the residue.
Modern dishwashers, especially energy-saving models, recycle water throughout the cycle rather than continuously heating it. If scum remains, it can circulate over your dishes during washes — yuck! That’s why commercial detergents rely on harsh chemicals like bleach to clear it out. But with a little extra effort, you can achieve the same results without compromising your health.
