The Switch

The Switch

Oct 18, 2025

It always started the same way one careless comment, one delay, one reminder that felt sharper than it should. Then the switch flipped.

I’d feel it before I saw it: a small rise in my chest, that pulse of heat that turns thoughts into reactions. The next few minutes would unfold the same way tone harder, words shorter, and something small breaking that didn’t need to.

It took me years to realize these weren’t random moments. They were patterns. The same triggers running the same script. Once the first domino fell, the rest followed without asking for permission.

One morning, after another argument that went nowhere, I started writing them down. Every time I felt that rise, I marked the time and what set it off. The list grew fast. But something changed the act of catching it made it slower.

The next time it happened, I paused long enough to see it coming. I didn’t fix it completely, but the cascade stopped at the second domino instead of the tenth. The silence that followed wasn’t guilt this time; it was control.

Catching your triggers doesn’t make you calm it makes you aware. You see the spark before the fire. You stop the story halfway.
