Stomach aches and some digestive problems can be prevented, relieved and even stopped with simple hygiene and dietary measures.
Six actions that help take care of your stomach
1. Drink alcohol in moderation
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health. Binge drinking (drinking a lot in a short period of time) increases the production of acid in the stomach, which can lead to digestive problems such as heartburn. Alcohol can even aggravate pre-existing digestive problems.
2. Lose extra pounds if you are overweight
If you are overweight, belly fat puts more pressure on the stomach and can cause digestive problems. Losing weight can therefore relieve certain symptoms such as heartburn and other problems related to gastric acidity.
3. Quit smoking
Smokers are more likely to suffer from gastroesophageal reflux, which is when acid flows back up from the stomach into the esophagus.
It is important to know that smoking contributes to inflammation of the lining of the esophagus and weakens the muscle that prevents the contents of the stomach from going back up into the esophagus.
4. Eat slowly, take the time to chew each mouthful.
Do not eat too large meals. You can do this by reducing your portions by eating from small plates.
Do not skip meals.
Drink enough water throughout the day.
Avoid overeating at dinner and eat your last meal of the day 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
5. Limit the consumption of certain foods
Spicy foods, foods high in fat, sugar and acidic foods can put a strain on your stomach. It is better to consume them occasionally. People who have a fragile stomach and are prone to bloating should also limit their consumption of raw foods because they are more difficult to digest.
6. Learn to manage your stress
Stress promotes digestive disorders such as stomach aches, constipation or diarrhea, and bloating. Stressed people also tend to lose their appetite. This is because anxiety increases the production of acid in the stomach and disrupts the digestive mechanisms. It is therefore important to learn to manage your stress to protect your stomach. You can do breathing exercises when you feel stress rising.
Practicing regular physical activity is also a good way to reduce stress on a daily basis. Meditation is also a tool that has proven itself in reducing stress.
