A rose for my coffee supporters

Last night, I sent out my latest newsletter about the flowers I saw today. But, I found one more for you, my dear coffee supporters. This photo shows a dog rose: Rosa canina. It is a wild rose species native to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia. I found it during my walk on the dunes.

The fruit is used to make syrup, tea, and marmalade and make pies, stews, and wine. The flowers can be made into syrup or can be eaten in salads. They are also candied or preserved in vinegar, honey, and brandy.

It has been grown or encouraged in the wild to produce vitamin C from its fruit, especially during conditions of scarcity or wartime. For example, during World War II in the United States, Rosa canina was planted in victory gardens and can still be found growing throughout the country, including on roadsides and in wet, sandy areas along the coastlines.
