After more than two years of homelessness, I've finally found a place to stay. It's a significant change, and I'm only now beginning to process the effects of this prolonged period of instability.
The trauma of homelessness is profound, and I'm still coming to terms with its impact. My first day in my new place, I slept almost continuously, waking only briefly to check messages or use the restroom. My friend, who's managing my GoFundMe, explained that this exhaustion is part of the readjustment process. It takes time for both body and mind to adapt to what we consider 'normalcy' after such a challenging experience.
This transition period is precisely why having a financial cushion is crucial. Rushing back into full-time work immediately after homelessness can be counterproductive. In the past, I've had to jump straight from traumatic experiences - like being attacked in a public bathroom - to working 40-hour weeks. It's an unsustainable cycle that often leads people back to homelessness.
Beyond the immediate need for rest, I'm facing numerous health issues that require attention. Living with HIV comes with its own set of challenges, including medication side effects. I've lost teeth while homeless, which impacts both my health and self-esteem. I need new glasses, dental work, and long-overdue cancer screenings. Mental health support is also a priority.
My current goal is to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe. This money will primarily cover my living expenses, but it's also a safety net for medical needs or unexpected costs. The aim is to have enough of a cushion to prevent falling back into homelessness should anything go wrong.
Looking ahead, I'm eager to become an advocate for the homeless. My experiences have shown me the dire need for support and understanding. I'm exploring training options and considering whether to set up a non-profit or join an existing organization. This isn't just about finding a job; it's about giving back to a community that has supported me through incredibly tough times.
As I work towards stability, I'm committed to finding ways to help others. The kindness I've received has been overwhelming, and I feel a deep responsibility to pay it forward. I may not be able to repay everyone directly, but I'm determined to make a positive impact in whatever way I can.
