TBD Devastator aircrews suffered tremendous losses in their attempts to launch torpedoes at the Japanese fleet. The USS Hornet CV-8's Torpedo Squadron 8 was lost to a plane with only one pilot, Ensign George Gay surviving the attack after escaping his sinking plane after being shot down during the attack. Despite their tremendous losses, their pilots are remembered for their bravery.
